Performances and Art Exhibition during Art Basel/Hong Kong

  • Asia Society Hong Kong Center (map)

Untitled No. 32 (Bodies and Rooftop) premieres alongside a major solo exhibition of Shen Wei's painting, entitled Dance Strokes, at Asia Society Hong Kong Center. This experiential work draws inspiration from pockets of greenery that exist within the claustrophobic urban environment. In this work Shen Wei's dancers bring to life a sensuous conversation between nature and the metropolis, between heritage and future, and between his dancers that paint with movements, and his brush strokes that impart dynamism.

Program:
A new site specific work for Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s sprawling rooftops, a world premiere during Art Basel-Hong Kong.

Shen Wei in Black, White, and Gray

Shen Wei will be exhibiting his recent series of paintings this winter at the Tucson Museum of Art in conjunction with SWDA performances at Centennial Hall presented by UA Presents.

Shen Wei’s choreographic and painterly explorations have often been contemporaneous, each informing the other, and this latest series have served as a jumping off point for his new movement inventions. While these paintings are abstract, shapes and forms suggestive of a sublime landscape seem to appear from the thick layering of paint on canvas--jagged rocks, rushing water, billowing clouds, a swooping bird. The compositions (exhibited at MDC Museum of Art + Design during Art Basel: Miami Beach 2014 and at Dallas' Crow Collection of Asian Art) embody dualities: forming and decaying, urgent and tranquil, gritty and grand.

SWDA Masterclass with Rehearsal Director Kate Jewett

From his cross-cultural and interdisciplinary experiences in dance and performance, Shen Wei has established his Natural Body Development Technique, a holistic approach to movement, body, and space. Masterclasses will serve as an introduction to Shen Wei's technique by investigating key movement ideas such as breath, internal energy, momentum, rotation and flow. Students may also have a chance to apply these concepts through guided improvisation.

"Shen Wei's reinvention of the dance vocabulary...flows from any point in his dancers' bodies to any other, bypassing every convention of dance-as-steps or choreography as a predominantly vertical statement." —Los Angeles Times
